The ABCs of WYD 2011 (a selection of important stuff...)


Catering
Those registered will receive meal coupons which will be valuable in over a thousand restaurants across Madrid, affiliated with WYD. Many places will also offer lunch or dinner to go.

Jóvenes Voluntarios (Youth Volunteers)
They are the backbone of WYD. 20,000 volunteers will be needed: those who wish to participate must register through the website.

Kairos
WYD will have a Vocations Fair, located in the Parque del Retiro. All movements and ecclesial realities are invited to participate in this display of the spiritual wealth of the Church.

Mochila (Backpack)
The backpack contains a Gospel, a Pilgrim’s Booklet (to follow the ceremonies), the Guide to World Youth Day (with the program, cultural events, etc.), the YouCat catechism, the WYD t-shirt, a hat, a fan, and a Rosary.

Reconciliation
To bring young people to the Sacrament of Reconciliation, the Parque del Retiro will host a Forgiveness Festival, in which World Youth Day participants will have several hundred priests hearing confessions in many languages.

Transportation
The public transportation network in Madrid is one of the most complete in the world. Payment of transportation is included in the registration, and will facilitate mobility throughout the Madrid area.

XX
The registered participants will receive a Pilgrim's Pass with their backpack, which will assign them to their reserved spot in the main events and will give them free access to the cultural activities of the Youth Festival.

YouCat
YouCat, short for Youth Catechism, is a catechism written for young people, with a prologue by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI, to be given to participants.

Zones

Zones of the central acts, divided into sectors to ensure the attention and safety of all, will be assigned based on the country of origin and the date on which the registration was finalized. The sooner they register, the closer they will be to the Pope.

MAIN WORLD YOUTH DAY EVENTS

Tuesday, August 16
8:00 am
Arrival at Madrid
From the early morning, the pilgrims and groups registered in WYD will be able to collect their accreditation and backpacks in the places indicated by the organization.

7:00 pm
WYD Opening Mass 
The World Day begins at 7 pm (provisional time) with a Mass in Madrid´s Cibeles Square, presided over by the archbishop of Madrid and concelebrated by the bishops and priests participating in WYD



Wednesday, August 17
10:00 am
Catechesis sessions
WYD participants, organized by linguistic groups, will have catechesis session with bishops from all over the world. The sessions will take place in churches, schools, auditoriums and sports centers of Madrid



Thursday, August 18
10:00 am

WYD participants, organized by linguistic groups, will have catechesis session with bishops from all over the world. The sessions will take place in churches, schools, auditoriums and sports centers of Madrid.

Papal Welcome
The participants will receive the Pope in Cibeles Square.



Friday, August 19
10:00 am

9:00 pm (provisional time) 
Via crucis
At each station, a statue from the traditional Spanish Holy Week will be located, representing the scene. These statues will come from all over Spain.


Saturday, August 20
4:00 pm
Preparatory ceremony in Cuatro Vientos 
Young people will arrive little by little at the aerodrome and take their places. Meanwhile, different activities will take place on the stage (testimonies of young people, musical interpretations, prayers to the Virgin, etc.), to prepare for the Vigil.

8:00 pm (provisional time) 
Vigil with the Pope 
The Pope will arrive at the Cuatro Vientos aerodrome, and Eucharistic adoration will begin. An address is planned by the Holy Father.
11:00 pm
Night in Cuatro Vientos
WYD participants will spend the night in the Cuatro Vientos aerodrome. For those who so wish, there will be several tents where they will be able to adore the Most Blessed Sacrament.


Sunday, August 21
9:00 am (provisional time)
WYD Mass of Sending
The Pope will concelebrate Mass with thousands of bishops and priests, and he will address young people and those who are not so young, to send them out to the world to witness to their faith, as the Lord did with his Apostles. At the end of the conclusive Mass, the Holy Father will announce the place where the next edition of World Youth Day will be held.


Youth Festival
Aside from the WYD main events, many different activities will take place throughout the day as part of the Cultural Program. The program will include concerts, exhibits, guided museum visits, plays, and much, much more. The complete list of activities will be announced later, when all proposals have been received and processed.
